History :

Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, in Becker County, was founded in 1871 along the Northern Pacific Railway. Originally inhabited by the Dakota and Ojibwe, the area was rich in lakes and forests. The town, initially named "Detroit" after Detroit, Michigan, added "Lakes" in 1926 to reflect its 400+ surrounding lakes. The Ojibwe name for the area, "Gaa-waabaabiganikaag," means "place of the white earth."

The railroad’s arrival spurred growth, making Detroit Lakes a trade and agricultural hub. By 1873, it had a post office, and in 1877, it was incorporated as a village, becoming a city in 1907. Early industries included lumber, grain, and dairy, with the Holmes Sawmill and creameries thriving. The town’s lakefront location attracted tourists, and by the 1880s, resorts like the Graystone Hotel catered to visitors.

The 20th century saw Detroit Lakes evolve into a regional center. The 1910 construction of the Becker County Courthouse solidified its role as the county seat. The city hosted events like the Northwest Water Carnival (since 1936) and WE Fest (since 1983), a major country music festival at Soo Pass Ranch. Tourism grew with attractions like the Pavilion, built in 1915, and the Historic Holmes Theatre.

Despite challenges like the 1931 Great Depression and a 1969 tornado, Detroit Lakes rebuilt and diversified. The 1990s brought retail growth with chains like Walmart, while Minnesota State Community and Technical College expanded education. The population grew to 9,969 by 2024.

Today, Detroit Lakes blends its heritage with modern appeal. The Becker County Museum preserves its history, and the city’s beaches, trails, and events draw thousands. Its vibrant downtown, historic sites, and recreational lakes make it a cultural and tourism hub in northwest Minnesota.
