History :

Mattawa is an incorporated city in Grant County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,335 at the 2020 census. Mattawa is a Grant County farming town of about 4437 people and is predominately Latino, with a very low level of English-speakers in the community. Mattawa is about 15 miles south of Interstate 90 on the east side of the Columbia River road known as Highway 243. It overlooks the majestic Columbia River and almost uncountable acres of orchards and vineyards.

The City of Mattawa actually came into existence in 1909. It was at this time that Mattawa was first platted. There was apparently no substantial development of the town until 1955. At this time, the Priest Rapid City Development Company, Inc. purchased the site and adjoining lands, and drilled one well approximately 765 feet deep. When the water system was completed, lots were sold and the town as we now know it was established. The town name of "Mattawa" is an Indian word meaning, "Where is it?". Given appropriately because the site of the town is not visible from the highway. In 1958, the Town of Mattawa was incorporated. Up to the present, many improvements have been made in the facilities of the town. There have been improvements to the streets, street lighting system, water system, and fire protection.

No one huffed or puffed and tried to blow the new library down – even though it’s built of straw.

This little farm town got a 1,500-square-foot library on Saturday with the help of volunteers and directions from IronStraw, a nonprofit group based in Cashmere.

The building was constructed with posts and beams and 330 bales of straw that will be covered with wire mesh and stucco. The Library will stock Spanish periodicals and bilingual materials for many of the Spanish-speaking people who call this Columbia River town home or stay here during the summer fruit harvest.
