Shelby, once a cattle town, is now home to oil and agriculture. Located on I-15 and U.S. Hwy 2, this town hosted the World Heavyweight Championship fight between Dempsey and Gibbons in 1923. Champion's Park in Shelby commemorates the event. Today, the local museum features area history, homesteading items and a dinosaur collection. Be sure to stop at the Carousel Rest Area Shelby. Featuring a restored 1936 merry-go-round with 900 lights and hand-painted animals, the carousel is a labor of love completed by the Shelby community in 2018. Shelby's Roadrunner Recreational Trail is a paved five mile loop of hills, wildlife and spectacular vistas. Outside of town, anglers love fishing for Walleye, Northern Pike and Perch along the Marias River and in Lake Elwell. Some of the most prime bow hunting in the northwest is located just outside Shelby’s back door. For deer hunting at its finest, the Marias River bottom offers some of the best white-tailed hunting in the state. Located only seven miles south of Shelby, several ranked Pope and Young white-tail have been taken. Newly acquired Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks property has established the Marias River State Park which will host limited-access deer hunting this fall.
