Elgin is a city in Grant County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 543 at the 2020 census. Elgin was platted in 1910 when the railroad was extended to that point. The railroad rejected the original name of Shanley, as it was too close to another community name, so citizens were to choose a new name. A committee member checked his "Elgin" brand watch and Elgin was suggested and accepted as it's new name.
The Highway 21 Treasure Hunt is a 100-mile rummage sale along Highway 21 in southwestern North Dakota, held the third weekend in June.
